Why not pin-type bearings - The kind that Railroad cars used before the invention of the roller bearing?

Imagine a toy Top with a metal point spinning in an indentation in a metal plate. Effortless. Imagine the same top with a shaft on the bottom, spinning in a sleeve. Hmmm.

The pin bearing presents much less friction area, could be adjustable for wear by a backplate screw (a-la Mirafone), or use a lightly sprung bearing plate. If made of steel or some other hard-wearing material (just the bearing pin(s) & plate, mind you), the thing would spin forever.

Any thoughts? Would there be a drilling effect from the back & forth motion in the bearing as described below?
