Anyone out there every try starting a company, being the sole employee and having the company get the gigs and not you directly?

In other words:

Joe Tuba forms the Joe Tuba Company. Joe becomes the tubist for the company. First Church of the Whatever contracts with the company to supply a tuba player for its brass quintet. The company sends its only employee, Joe, to fill the gig. The church pays the JT Co. and the company pays Joe.

Was it worth the while? Any tax advantages? Were you able to get into a group insurance plan? Were things like payroll taxes and paperwork too much of a pain? etc.?

Thanks.
