Exactly! Take a book for rehearsals, but not for the gig. Don't let reading be an excuse for mis-counting either.

Also, consider this: if you're talking about a steady, non-professional sitution, and you have some inklink of how to play various utility percussion stuff, and your kitchen dept. could use a few more hands, you might volunteer to help out. That's how I got started as a hack-amateur percussionist, and I ended up getting far more calls to come play utility percussion, than to come play tuba. I once did Janacek's "Sinfonietta", where I was covering bass tuba, tenor tuba (outer movements), and suspended cymbal. That was fun. In Mahler 6, I've done utility percussion (plenty of it!) while doubling the regular tubaist in several spots. You can more easily get away with these things on non-paying, or low paying gigs. Just a thought to helping to kill the boredom.
