I've been working on a paper for my english class regarding orchestral tubas, and my research has shown that there is a small difference in the resonation as well as how bright or dark a horn sounds in relation to the type of metal it's made out of. I don't believe that it's purely for looks why a pro prefers one metal over the other.
Silver tends to give off a darker tone than brass is what I've come up with, I agree with that after playing several tubas in brass and silver. You are right though, it's not the difference between night and day.
