I'm not sure there would be any orchestras left if they were not allowed to take private donations. I'm not sure any orchestra makes enough on ticket receipts to pay the bills.

The reason orchestras exist is that enough people with enough money obviously care enough about orchestras (and other arts organizations) to insure that they survive.

Many of the donations for orchestras and other arts organizations come from major corporations who believe that, in order to attract talented people to come work for them, the city in which they do business needs to be attractive to educated, high class people. There are many other economic reasons that corporations and governments fund the arts - just like they subsidize parks, zoos, and athletic and popular entertainment venues. A study was done on the economic impact of the arts on Boston and it was found that the arts brings more money to Boston (tourism, shopping, restaurants, etc.) than all the Boston athletic teams combined.
