I agree that the importance of personal affliliation cannot be over-emphasized. One of the things the US Navy Band does before and after most concerts is "Meet-and-Greet." There is a small convention-type info booth with photos and flyers, 2 or 3 persons thanking the patrons for their attendance, and also answering any questions they might have.

The patrons truly appreciate the chance to meet and shake the hand of one of the musicians: very often they thank you for your service to our country, and mention their own military service, or their loved one's. All this creates a feel-good atmosphere around the concert, and assures the patrons will come back for more.

Plus, I get a warm fuzzy from hundreds of people thanking me personally, and telling me how much they enjoyed our performance.

Small time commitment for a very large payoff, I think.
