A point was made about a statement Gene Pokorny made last summer at the Harvey Phillips Big Brass Bash encouraging tubists to go to the schools and reach out to the kids. These are not just words from Gene, he practices what he preaches - on occassion he does go out to some Chicago area schools exposing kids to the tuba. Yep, he's busy but makes time to do this.

I play in a few community orchestras that do daytime concerts for school kids. This is probably the first exposure that kids have to an orchestra and, unfortunatly maybe the last but there is the effort. It is amazing to hear the reasons why some orchestra members skip out of these concerts. Forget the ones who just don't care, they're hopeless. How about those who cannot get a morning off of work? Try telling me that a business cannot survive a morning while someone is playing a kiddie concert. Seems there is a lack of importance developing an audience.
