The point is, musicians shouldn't be complaining about having to take a pay cut if their orchestra is in financial trouble. If it's the only way to keep it going, then deal with it until things get better. If things never get better, then at least you allowed the orchestra to function for a few seasons more than they would have if you hadn't taken the pay cut.
