My guess is that the technology in Rick's field simply changed very quickly while he was pursuing his degree and continued to change very quickly thereafter.
Above, we just touched on the abuse and/or distortion of "tenure". I can't imagine being on the "bleeding edge" and yet - purposefully, lazily, or because of lack of cognition - teaching outmoded techniques. I couldn't follow the logic in either of your supposed examples on that point - again, considering the "bleeding edge" level of true professors.
Kenneth, truly I can always sense your own dedication (You must know - to be absolutely clear - that this is meant with absolute earnestness.), and "bleeding edge" character, but perhaps this post was a bit too apologetic for one's colleagues in the "biz".
