This is exactly the effect I was seeking when I finally decided to learn my scales (to the limited extent that I have). And I know it works, because I'm stymied during sight-reading by those runs that don't follow a scale pattern, usually because of skipped notes. Then, the muscle memory fights me. But at least I can do the common patterns now, where before I couldn't do any of them.
I learned the scales by ear, but I find that my fingers still recognize the patterns when I run across them during reading.
