Ebay is just a metaphor; they aren't set up to handle this kind of auction. It couldn't be highest bidder decides the program, that would unfairly discriminate against those with less money. A priori, the auction would need to have multiple divisions: corporate bidders, wealthy bidders, and non-affluent bidders. Since the last two are not readily discernible without checking, using the donor list and amounts donated to assign people to the wealthy bidders list. Those who donated under a certain amount and those who are not donors get relegated to the non-affluent list. Each of the three pools have equal votes, and the dollar weights of the bids within each pool are used to determine how each pool votes. I envision a process that replaces at least both season ticket sales and donation solicitation. Naturally, the traditional donors would want to set minimum and maximum bids that fit within their tax-planning strategies.
