Dig into the back issues of The Instrumentalist. There was an article from February, 1974 by Ronald A. Sellers. He conducted tests of various types of tubas, even including a sousaphone, where, to simulate a bell-up mode, the player bent over backwards.

The results were that the sound distribution from the bell-front horns was far too directional, making the instrument hard to hear off-axis. The other problem was that water gurgling, bad articulation and valve noise(!) were considerably more audible. Interstingly enough, when the bell-fronts were pointed toward the rear of the stage, the sound was indistinguishable from the bell-up varieties.
