I don't know how things have changed since I was in the AFM the last time....but I think it varies by state. Arizona is a "right to work" state, so there are no closed-shop (officially) groups. You can't be forced to join the union to get a contract to play.

When I was playing in NY state, a place of business that hired union musicians (like the restuarant that I was a "wandering violinist" in) could not hire a non-union musician.

So the rules of whatever state you live in will affect what is the correct answer to your question.

What I found in NY was that I could make more money free-lancing if I was NOT a member of the union. Here in AZ I haven't dealt with it because I haven't done much professional playing.
