I feel the pain.

It's hard to communicate the message to many that 3 hours of playing usually end up being 7 or 8 hours out of my day.

I live 40 minutes from my closest gigs, and about 1 hour and 15 minutes away form Memphis. When I geg a gig, it takes me 2 hours to load the equipment, (string bass, tuba, amp, tool box with cords), load the tux and shoes, and get to the place. I am always mindful to be an hour early, to avoid problems, setup, and change. Play the gig, and then up to 1 1/2 hours home (not counting unloading the next morning).

I'm not the best bassist/tubaist in the Memphis area. I make no claims to be so; but my time is valuable to me, as time is valuable to many of the musicians who post here. It amazes me how many people out there feel like they're doing me a favor by offering $20 and all the booze I can handle.

I feel like ranting and raving or arresting someone tonight.

Tom Mason
