I got picked to play tuba because I was one of the only two kids in elementary school big enough to pick it up. And the other kid got one too.

And we didn't have a van. 1n the late forties nobody had a van. I had to walk to and from school carrying the damned thing. Although some people did have nice looking station wagons with real wood bodies, and the guy who came around selling vegetables had a really great horse that all the kids could pet and the ice man still came around for the few people on the street whose refrigerators didn't need to be plugged in. And the coal men came every couple of weeks and carried the baskets of coal around to the back of the house and slid them through a cellar window into the coal bin. From which I got to shovel them into the furnace every AM. All within 5 miles of downtown Boston.
