I am guessing that this is just more information backing up a trend. Meanwhile, as symphonies collapse, opera is starting to become the "in" thing in the arts community. Our local symphonies, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra and the Dayton Philharmonic, are not in incredibly bad shape. However, the new Schuster Performing Arts Center makes it possible to stage a full-production opera, with no space constraints. Therefore, my giess is that opera will become more popular, while the symphony lapses in our area. SSO is fortunately balanced by a wonderful local arts organization, and having played with the symphony twice, I can say that its poularity is not in danger. My point here is, that except for some major symphonies, other forms of art are going to become more popular. Just look for the trend.
