It's no wonder that orchestras are suffering, when times are flush, mistakes can be overcome but in today's economic conditions, sloppy management can cost jobs. Additionally, if you are looking for financial security, music has never been the best choice.

The US is in the middle of a financial crisis which was, in my opinion, heightened by the terrorist attack of 9-11. Since that time billions of dollars have gone into security that would have gone into the pockets of employees and investors. I can point to dozens of telecom workers who were making over $100,000 two years ago who are making $30,000 today.

Ways of doing business have drastically changed and almost every company that depends on donations is watching the purse strings closely. The Red Cross is one example.

The list of orchestras NOT endangered is very short indeed. Good news: the economy will rebound (in spite of all of the elected officials).

I am now taking my soapbox down.
