Wait a minute--even Whiteman had to downsize, in 1931. Violinist Joe Venuti was one of those who was cut from the orchestra.
To answer Mary Ann, most of the 1920s era jazz and dance band musicians went into the studios or radio. Some musicians, like trumpeter Phil Napoleon, lost all of their money when the banks failed.
