I've noticed some quintets that seat the french horn at the back with the bell facing the back of the stage, and the tuba on the audience's left with the bell pointing up and rearward.
In the venues where I've heard this it seemed to work OK but they were generally pretty "live".
Is there a "preferred" position for the tuba in a quintet?
