It depends on where you want to go to school. The big conservatories are not too concerned with GPA, in many cases as long as you have a valid Bachelors degree you can get in. If you don't do well on the placement exams you will have to take "make up" courses.

Universities, on the other hand are more concerened with your GPA. You have to be academically admitted to the university as well as pass the school of music's playing audition. If you hope to get an assistantship the GPA becomes even more critical. You should check out a variety of schools that you are interested in and see on an individual basis.

As was already stated, if you bust your butt and do really well, it can only help. Either get you into a school, or help you do much better on the placement exams. And down the line a high GPA on your transcript may hep you get a teaching gig.
