The GPA generally must be over 3.0 but often assistantships have less to do with the grades over 3.0 and more to do with performance ability. (depending of course on the institution, instructor and chosen degree program).

Another consideration, when looking at transcripts, might be progress. Take me as an example. I blew off a couple years worth of college by not going to class. After I started making myself go, it raised my overall G.P.A. from academic probation (one semester from being kicked out) to a 3.6
