Most high-level music organizations have some sort of screening process--sometimes a review of resume, or a recording, etc etc... So, on the day of auditions, they aren't "wasting their time."
There is one pro group you can audition for though--The "President's Own" Marine Band. They will literally hear ANYONE who shows up to play, as far as I know--there is no pre-audition screening round. So, you can do that if you want to try an audition with some great players. But, it makes for a LONG day (unless you get there real early), as they audition people in the order they arrived. And, unless you are a hot player, dont expect to be on stage more than a few minutes... Up to you if you think it is worth it!!
