but that was a completely different era, when there weren't 150-200 people sending resumes for any job that comes open. Most major orchestras (meaning full-time professional make-a-living orchestras) are not in the business of letting people audition "just for the experience". Now, more than ever, it's hard for qualified musicians to get an audition, so why not get your audition experience on the local or regional level? It'll be the same experience...a bunch of guys trying to outblow each other in the warm-up room, followed by most of them coming off stage with a "dammit, that didn't go the way I wanted it to" look on their face. Get together with a committee of friends, and play down audition lists for each other. I'll bet you'll find that you get just as nervous playing a mock audition. Plus, the airfare is cheaper, and your horn won't get trashed on the way.
