It is becoming more common for the horn to play with the bell facing the audience, instead of bouncing the sound off a back wall.
It's especially effective in quintet charts that have the horn doing frequent solos--it allows the sound to stand out better. Also probably a little easier overall on the hornist--being the middle voice usually means that the horn is playing most of the time.
