since the vast majority of orchestras will reject you outright or force you to make a tape, you're probably best off putting as much time into auditioning for regional orchestras as you can. If you win a spot or get on a sub list, you can get quite a bit of work. If you think you're really hot stuff, find out when (and if) the biggest orchestra in your area has a sub-list audition and go for it... even if you get on, you might not get work, but it's good for the resume. yes, a few teenagers have done very well at recent auditions (I think Tony Kniffen was 18 when he made finals or something for Chicago; the guy who plays principal t-bone in Chicago Lyric was 18 when he got the job), but most of them already have a lot of clout and the backing of a really big name teacher. If you're one of these people, go for it. If not, get experience and build your resume.
