Why? Because the offer may be lousy. The offer comes after the audition, not before it. The audition winner doesn't know what the offer is going to be. (I agree that it is not relevant to a teenager wondering if he is being foolish.)

But I absolutely agree that nobody ought to apply for a job that they would not want to do no matter what is offered, or that they would likely not succeed in doing even if they accepted. Those decisions are hard to make early on--that is why there is negotiation.

It's a little like dating. Lots of folks spend all their time trying to prove themselves to the person they are dating. If they succeed, they often get married only to discover that they didn't think enough about whether the other person was someone they could live with. Both parties in any partnership have to be able to contribute to the partnership.
