There is no doubt that a great player makes himself (or herself) great. Still, a teacher with superior experience, organizational skills, and analytical skills will usually produce superior results.

The best teacher I ever had taught me more in eight weeks at a summer camp than all of the teachers I had in college. The college guys were good, and one of them in particular pushed me harder than all of the rest; I appreciate what they did for me. However, the best teacher I had was a student of Arnold Jacobs at the time, and I feel that his superior knowledge of the instrument and use of Jacobs' techniques did more to motivate me than anything else ever did.
