My Conn 28K is the same way. Big and heavy with a plate as you described. The edge rested against my neck! Soooo..... it's pretty easy to customize the plate by doing a little rebending so it fits better. If the changes are radical, you can unsolder the plate, reform it to suit, and remount it in a location that is more suitable. Heck, it's just a peice of rolled brass. Many of them have fallen off anyway!
