Another possibility is that you can study the piano/tuba score seperately.
I know of a cellist (and have done this myself, as a result) who actually rehearses, reading the piano/cello part, so he can SEE what the piano is doing! (Warning: page turns are a bear!) I found that it gives me a more global undrstanding of the piece.
