We have 4 983's at work. A couple of them had quite slow valves (one used to 'catch' on the upstroke) when they were new. How old is yours?

The steps I used:

First I checked the students' hand positions; thinking that if the right hand fingers were pushing the valves sideways, the valves would catch.

Then I resorted to:

Washing the valves and inside the casing with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid. Use a valve brush...rinse thoroughly.

Oil, with a quality valve oil.

If that doesn't help, some lapping may be needed (see the archives): I used Solvol, which is (as far as I can tell) the Australian equivalent of Lava Soap.

Let us know how that works...
