With contrabass tubas, the "4th valve" pitches generally seem to "jump right out".

The one low pitch that I always like to "test" on a contrabass CC tuba (for response) is the low EE, as it generally tends to be a bit dubious compared to the F, F#, & G.

The answer to your question (at least in my experience) is "Yes". When I "work hard" to play very low pitches on contrabass tubas, the sound just "shuts down" (unless, like you said, it is silver).
