Here's my silly opinion on mouthpiece throat size.
I expect a certain amount of resistance in a tuba in order for me to use my lackluster amateur amount of air to its best advantage. If the tuba has less resistance than I want, I can use a smaller mouthpiece with a smaller throat to get closer to the resistance that I prefer.
