Carole has a big point but . . . there are shows that are easy for some to get to and difficult for others. Not all shows can be in your neighborhood or even in your country. Not everyone can travel half way accross the country (or world) to get to a show. That is what the concept of the regionals is about, yes it maybe a six hour drive - better than a six hour plane ride. At Texas there was only one other person I saw at another regional (not considering lecturers and exhibitors).
There may have been a problem in the Southeast in the last year with Greensboro, Army Band (DC), Ground Forces Band (GA) and the Alabama regional. Overkill there but when was the last tuba show in Texas? Mass? Kansas? Maybe a question of planning.
