Back when I was taking auditions, about 20 years ago, there was a school of thought that said to use a 4/4 CC tuba (or smaller) on the preliminary rounds, and save the 6/4 for the later rounds. The idea was that the smaller tuba might sound more pleasing to the ear while playing alone (i.e a more soloistic sound), then use the bigger tuba which would be more resonant when playing with the trombone section.

This was about the time that St. Louis was taping the preliminary rounds over a period of time, with the semi's and finals scheduled at a later date. Gene Pokorney played his preliminary round the same day as I did, and he used a smaller tuba on the recorded round, and then reportedly used the Hirsbrunner in the later rounds.

Since I only had my 5/4 Rudy, I used different mouthpieces for different excerpts to try and achieve the same sort of results.
