Conventional wisdom dictates that you should probably go the way of the C. If you bought an F tuba, even a large one, you are going to have a hell of a time pulling off excerpts like The Ride of the Valkyries (sp?) in a placement audition.

HOWEVER, you could always just stick with the Bb Miraphone throughout your college career and buy an F for solo literature. Nothing wrong with that, especially if you do not plan on going out and auditioning for any orchestras after college. I am a junior in college and currently own a C, but am thinking of trading that in for a versatile Eb. That way, I can have fun with the solo literature while still maintaining the status quo in concert band and orchestra. Besides, I will be in a military band after I graduate, where the C (or Bb) will be provided. After that, I will be teaching, and would rather have a "solo" horn to fiddle around on. Makes sense to me.

Or, you could just buy a CC and an F.
