Having TA'ed a college marching band for two years and now serving as the visual director for our high school marching band, I think that the 'section' concept of sound is absolutely the way to go. You have to rehearse the music just like it's the Hindemith Symphony! Tune it, balance it, clean it, etc. Warm-up in the family arcs everyday and constantly get in their faces about the sounds they're making, and the balance they're producing. If you can teach them to listen across an open field, they're certain to listen and match pitch, volume, and style indoors in the concert setup. It's all about keeping the players as individuals accountable for what's coming out of their instruments. Just my two cents...
