When trying dramatically different mouthpieces on various tubas, once the "new experience" wears off (and I get used to the feel, etc.) I find that all of the pitch tendencies are just about identical on tubas from one mouthpiece to the next...and I've done quite a bit of shank-shaving in my day, as well.
Here, we're talking about a tuba that is about 7-8 inches too short. Even if I'm completely wrong about the effects of mouthpieces and you're completely correct, I doubt if even a "Dr. Young" would bring this instrument down to A=440.
I appreciate your suggestion, and I'm glad that you've had success with changing mouthpieces.
