I personally find the Stonelined mutes to not produce a muted sound at all. They seemed to quite the horn down, but do not alter the timbre. Try a Dennis Wick tuba mute. To my ears, the DW mute has the most unique color to its sound. It also happens to be a relativelly free blowing mute compared to some of the other offerings.
