My take on the issue is that plating or lacquer will wear eventually. That's just the price of playing an instrument. Hagerty's is probably about the best for the purpose, IMHO and shouldn't remove very much silver and leaves a protective coating to boot.

When an isntrument tarnishes, it's usually metallic silver combining with airborne sulfides. Even the gentlest of polishes removes the tarnish, and by inference, the metal contained therein. There are some special-purpose polishes (such as Silversmith) that contain silver and will actually deposit new metal, but they're generally pretty toxic (Silversmith has a small amount of Potassium Cyanide).
