Boy, that's a good question!
This is a guess but I wuold say that it's closer to a euphonuim than a tuba, the larger looking valves are mostly because they're Berliner valves (fat squatty type of valve)used on earlier valved instruments (at least they look like they are from the pictures).
I think that this about ends my limited knowledge of older horns, any others care to venture some info?
