Are they worth the extra cost? Well, are they worth the extra cost _to_you_? When you play on one, do you forget about ever playing other tubas you've tried? Do you want to run away to Vegas with it and marry it?
As always, an instrument is a much more personal decision than a toaster or a car. Just because other people say it's good doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good match for you.
But, with the nearly all-positive comments about Hirsbrunners, the odds are very good that you'll like it.
Then again, maybe some of the great players you see on them have worked their butts off because they didn't want that $10+K to go to waste!
