Contrabasses are not convertables. Sure, the little convertable horns that high schools use get beat up, but drum corps that use real contras take good care of them. And the only thing that would cause damage to one's back from marching a contra would be if you had really weird posture, such as if you leaned backwards when you play (a task which is actually rather hard to accomplish on a full size or larger horn, but which is a problem I have to deal with when teaching people how to play the smaller horns). I don't think much of the Yamaha M-series, because of the hand position required to play. Better brands are the Dynasty contras and Kanstul.
