I have palyed on both sousa's and with conta's in DCI, with Phantom Regiment. I think that
sousa's give that classic look, but for a competative marching band a contra gives a cleaner look and it is easier to do horn visuals. I Suggest if you are going to go with contra's to look into the Kanstul line. I won the DCM(Drum Corps Midwest) Solo contest and got second at the DCI contest playing on a Kanstul. They are great.
