I think he is talking about the "fuzzy", "indistinct" tone that some mouthpieces produce when you are right on top of the player. Usually this seems to lessen with distance from the player. But it is nice to get rid of it, as much as is possible anyhow, as sometimes playing situations dictate that the audience is right on top of you, or in recording situations with a microphone close by. Joe please correct me if I am misunderstanding your point.
