The Brasswind is in South Bend, Indiana, which is a two-hour flight, plus a goodly drive, from New York. But if you have time in the city, find a way to Dillon's in Woodbridge, New Jersey. That's a suburb of New York, but if you go at a bad time, it might take less time to get to South Bend!

Dillon's is one of the great tuba stores in the U.S., and it should have plenty of horns for you to try out.

Matt Walters is Dillon's chief repair artist and general tuba guy. He's active here, as you probably know. But he won't pitch his store here without a push, so push him. If you visit, make arrangement beforehand so they can spend your time effectively.

You might consider a Yamaha 621 F tuba. It's smaller, but has a clear voice with lots of presence, and a distinct sound that will punch through a lot of other sounds pretty effectively. It's not a symphonic sound, but it seems like you might prefer that. It's a good horn for playing high, but unlike many others that play high well, it doesn't penalize you down low.
