There is a trumpet/horn/trombone method called the Maggio method, which teaches the use of the tongue to control air flow, along with vowel sounds for various ranges. I'm trying to learn it (on horn) but not getting much of anywhere. When I raise my tongue to increase the air speed, the pitch actually drops rather than rising. I can get the same high note both with my tongue on the floor and the roof of my mouth. I don't have a very good high range, either.
