If I play straight from the mid-register in to the pedal register, I end up putting more top lip in to the mouthpiece. But, if I want to get really quick response with a loud sound, I do a shift which puts me almost entirely on bottom lip. With the shift I can play really loud, but my flexibility suffers big time.
