Listen to Floyd, DON'T SOAK IT IN HOT WATER! With all due respect to Art, there are many different lacquer formulations out there.
20 years ago, I ruined the finish on my (then only 6 months old) Rudy when I was trying to be a responsible teenager and take good care of my horn. I wanted it really clean so I soaked it in hot water. The lacquer softened and turned cloudy. As it cooled, the cloudiness disappeared, but the finish still looks blotchy. You are wise to ask for clarification instead of experimenting on a valuable instrument.
You might want to try the Horn Flush system - I think Brasswind carries it.
