I have several students like this every year. Most of them (90%) can not start on Bordogni this early. But the Rubank ELementary method has a nice set of old songs in the back and these are mentioned in the text periodically for extension of technique and melodic development. I mention the Rubank Elementary Method because it takes the student to top-of-staff A or Ab. Most of the other elementary methods (Standard of Excellence, Belwin, etc.) don't approach that in the first year. I have always thought this is because they are class methods and present material that everyone can master, not specific material for each instrument. The Bell Method is also good but may be out of print. I wait until the secoond year to begin Bordogni and, maybe, Koprasch for a serious kid.
