That's not actually true (at least not here in the UK), as my brother just bought one from a retailer in London called "The Valve" (seems a slightly bizarre name for a place that specialises in trombones). Can't remember the cost, but his was cheaper anyway as his tutor has something to do with the company. I don't know whether any similar places exist in the US. (So I guess this ins't really that helpful...)
